I made an identically-titled post years ago, about an identical game, at least in spirit. See, after some careful deliberation, I came to the conclusion that an on-calc RPG maker, even if immaculately programmed, just wouldn't be that practical. The thought of creating every last sprite with nothing but arrow keys, inputting text without the aid of a QWERTY keyboard... There's no way anybody could get anything good out of it. A PC-based RPG maker that generates the program for the TI-89 - now THAT would be worthwhile. Unfortunately, such a thing lies far, far beyond my own capability.
Thus, I've returned to this project, Bound, with a matured imagination, and the same goal of providing something the TI community still appears to be in great need of: a full-length, in-depth, kick-you-in-the-face, awesome RPG.
Now, as there is a remote possibility that some of you may recall, I'm no sprite artist, so I've turned to Final Fantasy VI to provide all the visuals. It's not simple laziness, mind you. The character sprites are easy enough to do, particularly with the aid of Fenrir's Sprite Domain, but the map tiles are another story. Converting 242 tiles for a single set? That's a lot of work. I just know that, if I were to attempt to achieve that quality on my own, it would take at least twice as long and come out no more than half as good. Of course, perhaps I'm trying too hard to justify myself. Nobody gave me any crap for remaking (or trying to remake) Final Fantasy I. Far from it, I got more praise than I deserved...
Anyhow, and finally, I'd like to share with you guys what I've managed to accomplish over the past four days...
sonetlumiere404.110mb.com/bound.zip
Arrow keys: Move
Shift: Switch character sprite set
Alpha: Special character pose
Plus/Minus: Adjust contrast
Diamond: Exit
Needless to say, you need to send all three files in the zip to your 89 to run the program.
The engine itself is pretty basic at the moment, as the majority of that time was spent preparing all the sprites, but it does employ TileMap's layering capabilities to draw a background and foreground plane. There is a single level map, which I designed myself (as I will be doing for all of them), and four character sprite sets.
All things said, I hope you guys find this promising enough. I intend to make up for never finishing FFI, and for uploading that other, shameful joke of a program whose name I won't mention...
